Trafficking in persons is a form of gender-based discrimination that distinctively and disproportionately affects women and girls, and negatively impacts the realization of their rights. Human Rights Watch interviewed more than 40 women and girls who were trafficked into sexual slavery or forced prostitution. Some women and girls we interviewed in NAPTIP shelters said they were not free to leave, and many had no clarity about when or how they would be reunited with their families.
